WINTER 1963

Here are two photographs taken of my aunt Betty taken during the winter of 1963, which in most peoples memories is the last bad winter, that we had. The photos were taken from my grandmothers doorway in Whitehouse Court. Has anyone else got any memories of that winter?

Thanks michael

1 - Thank you Michael for putting the photos on site.A close look at them suggests that your Aunt Betty might have previously fallen in the snow - or was it the case that she had given a snow clad youngster a big hug prior to the photographs being taken?

2 - Here is just a bit more about cold and snowy Ushaw Moor.Probably the coldest winter in Britain happened in 1684 but 1739/40 was very chilly as well.
We had to wait 223 years for a winter as cold as 1740 - yes 1963 - and the photographs submitted by Michael capture it so well.
Ofcourse 1947 was bad and the worst part was more or less from the third week of January 1947 until the middle of March 1947.

3 - When I gave my wife her earl grey tea at 6.55am this morning [I had slept in a bit]she informed me that it was minus 10 degrees in the North East of England.I began to imagine that the NE was experiencing heaped up snow drifts such as those in Michael's pictures. (Comment this)
