Ernest Hope Ellis (ernie)
Hi saw your blog on ushaw moor.
Ernest Hope Ellis (10 Oct 1939 - 27 Jun 2007 )
my father law Ernie recently passed away , and worked in the mine till it
closed in 1960,
and eventually followed the mine work to Calverton in Nottingham.
i saw the name HOPE mentioned by several families.
so i'am assuming Ernie is a relative to someone.
Ernies parents were George Henry Ellis and Ida Hope( born 17 May 1916).
Ernie has two brothers Bill and Ronald Ellis , and a sister Elsie.
If anyone can help me fill in some more blanks , it would very interesting
Thanks
Matt

May I extend my condolences at your recent loss.
It is my mother's family that are mentioned on the site.
There is no obvious connection [at present] between my family of Hopes and the Ellis family.
During my family researches I did become aware of a William Ellis and his wife Thomason Ellis - they lived in New Brancepeth for a while and also,I think,Ushaw Moor. They had atleast two children - Isabel and Jane and those children may well have been teenagers by the time of World War One.I have no idea whether they are part of your Ellis family.
As an aside I remember telephoning Elsie Ellis in 2001 regarding a class reunion that I was arranging. It subsequently took place in Spring 2002. She pointed out during the phone call that she was not in the relevant school form.
I am sorry that I cannot help further.

brian mc loughlin confirms it is ernie 3rd from left at backrow of the school photo of 1949.
Also met with ron's aunt peggy (now aged 84 and still living in her mothers house in new brancepeth), who had just received a photo of ron and ernies grandfather William Ellis.
William Ellis apparently was a preacher at the baptist church in ushaw and married the first of two sisters( who was also organist at the church ) and later he married the second sister. also peggy told me that william gave up preaching as the second sister was a bit of a 'wrong-un'.
peggy could remember william always picked the wild flowers everyday and tied them with rafia ,and also wore a poppy in his button hole , until just the black button center remained.
If anyone can remember the two sisters names , please let me know.
have emailed a photo for the gallery of William Ellis and flossy.

just confirming William Ellis was grandfather
to ernie,ron, william and elsie.
Ernies grandfather was married twice to two ?sisters ?.
Williams children were Thomason,Isabella,Jane Ellen and George Henry( ernies father ).
Thomason we believe went to london to work in a hospital for the blind.
Isabella married a Jack Bailey , and she died
in an explosion at the Aycliffe Munitions Factory
2nd May 1945; see :-http://www.communigate.co.uk/ne/aycliffeangels/page22.phtml (eight workers killed).
Jane Ellen married ???? and had 6 children
Peggy , Billy , George , Clyde , Jack and Raymond.
Peggy married George Edward Gibson , and Peggy is still alive and well (age 84) at her mothers old house in New Brancepeth.

Much as I love history books Paul's site has the advantage of being interactive. Long may it continue. (Comment this)
