June 1932 Ushaw Moor
I could be out supping a couple of pints of good beer tonight but we have decided to save a few pennies. Anyway, in late June 1932 Ushaw Moor were on their way to winning the North East Durham Cricket League. One of their tense and very well attended home matches was against Chilton Moor [the previous year's champions] and the scorecard was as follows:
Ushaw Moor

T Halliday 4
A Marchant 7
R Hope 11
F Hildrey 0
J Gibson 13
G Gillespie 0
R Wilson 0 [not out]

That was a very good score considering that they were 0 for 2 wickets early on.M Gibson was a Durham Johnson schoolboy at the time.

J Swainston, chairman of Ushaw Moor Working Men's Club, presented the cup to the Ushaw Moor captain J F Spikings.
During a visit to Ushaw Moor in 1998 I popped in to the Ushaw Moor Cricket Club. I asked whether they had completed a history of the team but they hadn't to that point.I was kindly shown the papers that they did have and noticed a reference to Michael McNamara winning the second team fielding award sometime in the 60s.I remember Michael and could easily understand why he might have won such an award. He was a decent goalkeeper in our kick abouts. He reminded me a bit of Alan Hodgkinson, the 5ft 8ins former England keeper! Praise indeed. I think Mike went on to graduate from university and spend much of his career in management consultancy. I don't think he has retired yet!
I imagine there might be technical difficulties in lining up the individual scores on the site - best of luck Paul. Your efforts are fully appreciated, whatever the result!
Best regards. Wilf Bell.
